Continuing education is a vital part of my massage therapy practice. By adding new techniques and honing my current skills, I am better able to help my clients feel great after their session.
Neuromuscular Therapy Certification, May 2013
My training is through The Body Therapy Center and School of Massage, an affiliate of Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, IL.
The course follows the work of Judith Walker DeLany, and comprises six modules: Introduction to NMT, NMT for Torso and Pelvis, NMT for the Cervical Spine and Cranium, NMT for the Upper Extremity, and NMT for the Lower Extremity. Each module consists of 32 contact hours spanning two full weekends of classroom instruction. At the end of each module, a demonstration exam is given testing for appropriate NMT techniques, knowledge of endangerment sites and specific anatomical location/attachment of tissues being treated.
Neuromuscular Therapy is an approach slightly more clinical in nature than most bodywork modalities. NMT relies on a variety of techniques to clean up soft-tissue dysfunction in such forms as hypertonic muscles, adhesions, scar tissue and trigger points. Cessation and resolution of pain are among the goals addressed by the neuromuscular approach.
